How does therapy work?

Find out more about how to get started with counselling and choose whether we talk by video call or phone.

  • Free phone consultation

If you’re interested in therapy but have some concerns or questions, I offer free 15-minute phone consultations. You can ask me your questions or find out more about what therapy is like.

Get in touch and we can arrange a time to speak.

  • Assessment

This takes around 50 minutes and it’s an opportunity to get to know each other a little and see if we’ll mesh well. I’ll ask you about yourself and what you’d like from counselling, to make sure I’m the right therapist for you.

If we both decide we’re a good fit, our first session will normally start within the next few weeks.

Online counselling can support with many issues but there are times when it’s not the right option. I’ll let you know if I feel that a different type of counselling or support service might work better for you and I’m happy to help you find something more suitable.

  • Starting online therapy

We’ll meet for 50 minutes at the same time each week either by video call or phone.

Before our first session, I’ll send you a welcome pack to read and sign. We’ll also chat this through as part of our first session.

During our sessions, it’s really important that you can sit somewhere that feels safe and you can’t be overheard by others – your kitchen, favourite armchair or even your car.

I ask clients to pay for each session ahead of time. I’ll send you a reminder for our session, including how to pay, a few days before we meet.

How to choose a counsellor?

Whether you’re having counselling for depression, counselling for anxiety or counselling for PTSD, having a helpful and healing experience is shaped by how well you mesh with your therapist. So choosing the right therapist is key. Find out more about how I work and what you can expect from counselling with me to help you decide.

Video Call

Online counselling from the comfort and safety of a place you choose. Like face to face counselling, it allows us to see each other as well as share resources or do creative exercises.

We’ll talk via secure video conferencing to your phone, computer or tablet and I’ll send you a link by email before our session.

You’ll need a good internet connection fast enough to stream Netflix or BBC iPlayer.

Telephone

For some, being seen on screen can feel off putting or you may not have the technology or internet connection available. Telephone counselling still allows you to access counselling at a time and place that suits you.

I’ll call you at our agreed time. All you’ll need is a telephone with a good signal, either landline or mobile. It’s helpful if you’ve got an email too so I can send you any resources we need ahead of our session.

Keeping Your Information Secure

To be able to provide safe, professional and effective therapy to you, I need to collect and store information about you. I do this securely and in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules. To find out what data I collect and how I store it safely, please read my Privacy Policy by clicking the button below.
